What You Should Know About Montana

Ever since the show Yellowstone came out, people have been moving to Montana expecting adventure, open land, and freedom. These are all things that can be found in Montana but there is more to it than that. Before deciding to move to Montana, there are some things you will want to know.

  1. Winter is at least six months long! Typically, we get our first wave of snow in November, but this last year we got it in October. It doesn’t melt right away either. It sticks around through March. So, if you are planning on moving to Montana, expect there to be about three foot slow snow for half of the year.
  2. February is the longest month of the year. By February, the snow pack has frozen and the ground is ice. People need to be extra careful and use cleats on their shoes in order to get around.
  3. The growing season is short. Usually the snow is all gone by April but that doesn’t mean the ground has thawed out. Our temperatures can remain in freezing at night through May, so the ground could stay frozen until June. This leaves only a few months to grow a garden. Most people have a greenhouse or grow their plants inside. 🪴 The good news! There is an abundance of water to help your garden grow. You just have to plan ahead.
  4. Summer days are long and definitely worth the winter. The temperatures are mild, and the scenery is beautiful. There is an abundance of outdoor activities that cost very little. If you can get past the six month of winter than the summer is the perfect time of year in Montana.
  5. You will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. This is something you will want to invest in both for safety and for fun. The roads are icy in the winter and muddy in the spring, so the safest way to travel is via a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The good news is that there are many off roading opportunities for you to take a 4 wheeler which only helps with the adventure part of living in Montana.
  6. Invest in Winter sports. Since there are six months of winter, it is important to involve yourself in the winter activities that go along with it. There is ice skating, ice fishing, snow shoeing, skiing, snowboarding, and much more. Most of these activities are worth the small expense because they keep you active and outside.
